Alternator or Starter?

Signs of a Bad Alternator or Starter

The alternator keeps the battery charged while you drive. The starter turns the engine over. They fail in different ways.

Battery Light While Driving

The battery warning light comes on with the engine running. Usually the alternator.

Lights Dimming

Headlights and dash lights dim, especially at idle. Usually the alternator.

Battery Keeps Dying

You jump it, and an hour later it's dead again. That's almost always the alternator, not the battery.

One Loud Click

A single click when you turn the key, with bright dash lights. Usually the starter.

No Crank, No Start

Lights and radio work, but the engine won't turn over at all.

Starts Some Days, Not Others

An intermittent no-start that gets worse over time often points to a failing starter.

Is It Really the Battery?

Battery, Alternator or Starter?

Eric checks which one it is on the spot, so the right part gets replaced.

Usually the battery

Battery

Rapid clicking or a slow crank, dim lights at startup, and the car starts fine after a jump.

Battery replacement
Usually the alternator

Alternator

Battery light on while driving, lights dimming at idle, or a new battery that keeps going flat.

Usually the starter

Starter

One loud click with bright dash lights, or a grinding noise when you turn the key.

Alternator & Starter Replacement Questions

How much does it cost to replace an alternator or a starter?

It depends on the vehicle and the part. Eric gives you the price for your car on the call, before he heads out, so you know the number before any work starts.

Is it my battery, alternator or starter?

A slow crank or rapid clicking points to the battery. A battery light while driving or a new battery that keeps dying points to the alternator. A single click with bright dash lights points to the starter. Eric tests on the spot to confirm which one failed.

My car clicks but won't start. What does that mean?

Rapid clicking usually means the battery is too weak to turn the engine. A single loud click usually means the starter. Either way, Eric can check it where the car is.

Can an alternator be replaced in my driveway?

Yes. Eric carries common alternators, so many jobs are done the same day where the car is parked.

Can every starter be replaced on site?

Most can. Some starters are hard to reach without a lift, depending on the vehicle. If that's the case, Eric tells you up front before charging you anything.

Do you come out at night or on weekends?

Yes. Eric takes calls 24/7, weekends included. Visits between 6pm and 5am carry a flat $200 after-hours fee, which he tells you about on the call.
