Before It Gets Worse

Signs Your Engine Needs Work

Engine problems rarely fix themselves. These are the ones worth a call before they turn into a bigger bill.

Rattle on a Cold Start

A rattle for a few seconds after a cold start is a classic sign of a stretched timing chain or worn tensioner.

Check Engine Light

Codes for misfires or cam and crank timing often point to engine work.

Misfires or Rough Running

Shaking, stumbling or a loss of power, often from coils, plugs or something deeper.

Oil Leaks

Oil on the engine or under the car, or a burning-oil smell from a leaking valve cover gasket.

Ticking or Knocking

A new tick or knock that gets louder needs a look before it causes damage.

Loss of Power

The engine feels weak, hesitates or struggles on hills.

Engine Repair Questions

How much does a timing chain replacement cost?

It depends on the engine. Eric diagnoses it first and gives you the price before any work starts.

Can engine work really be done in my driveway?

Yes, a lot of it. Timing chains, valve cover gaskets, coils and leak repairs are all jobs Eric does on site. The photos on this page are from his own jobs.

What are the signs of a bad timing chain?

A rattle for a few seconds on a cold start, a check engine light with cam or crank timing codes, or the engine running rough. Get it checked early: a chain that jumps or breaks can damage the engine.

Do you rebuild engines?

No. Eric doesn't do internal engine rebuilds. He'll tell you straight on the phone if that's what your car needs, with no wasted trip.

Is my engine worth fixing?

Eric gives you an honest answer once he knows what's wrong, so you can decide before any money is spent on the repair.

Do you come out at night or on weekends?

Yes. Eric takes calls 24/7, weekends included. Visits between 6pm and 5am carry a flat $200 after-hours fee, which he tells you about on the call.

Engine Acting Up? Call Eric.

Tell him the car and what it's doing. He'll tell you what it needs before any work starts, anywhere from Fredericksburg and Stafford to Spotsylvania, Woodbridge, Manassas and Culpeper.
